Experimental Film: Introduction to techniques

 An experimental film is usually categorized by the absence of linear narrative. Unorthodox narrative almost being non sensical  

Rapid editing- quick kinetic editing or barely any editing 

Unrealistic (performances/ Mise-en-scene- eccentric props, costumes) 

Surreal plots 

Inherently uses other artistic mediums and combines them for example the surrealist movement dada influencing films. Also using art forms like collaging, Fracturing etc. 

The use of Non-Diegetic sound or having no sound track at all 

Instead of being created to entertain or to generate revenue experimental films are usually created to express the personal vision of the artist.

using more visual images rather than using dialogue

Experimental films not tied to any character arcs, story structure or common sense 

don't have a set run time could be from minutes to hours.  

by having no set rules to experimental filmmaking means that many different forms are created which make it difficult to draw out its specific codes and conventions.
